“Introducing the Revolutionary Fedora Asahi Remix for Macs with Apple Silicon”

Asahi Linux developers have been tirelessly working to bring the world GNU/Linux on Macs with Apple Silicon, since the very beginning of Apple’s sale of these powerful devices. While earlier versions of their Linux for Mac software were based on Arch Linux ARM, the Asahi team recently announced their highly anticipated flagship operating system, built on Fedora.

We all have been eagerly waiting for its arrival, and the time has finally come as Fedora Asahi Remix is now officially released. Although there were initial plans to launch the OS by the end of August, it’s better late than never.

According to an article on Fedora Magazine, the first release of Fedora Asahi Remix is based on Fedora 39 and offers the KDE Plasma user interface by default. However, those who prefer the GNOME environment can also switch to it easily. Both interfaces use Wayland for display, while also providing support for X11 apps through XWayland.

Aside from impressive visuals, the Asahi team has also worked on delivering hardware-accelerated graphics through their pioneering efforts in reverse engineering Apple’s GPU architecture. The result is a highly functional OpenGL ES 3.1 conformant driver, along with non-conformant support for OpenGL 3.3.

While Fedora Asahi Linux should run smoothly on most Macs with Apple M1 and M2 processors, not all hardware features are currently supported. Thunderbolt and USB4 functionality are currently broken on most models, Touch ID and built-in mics are not yet supported, and even the iMac speakers are not fully compatible. USB-C displays are also not yet supported, but the Asahi team is constantly working on adding support for more hardware features.
